Bag Leaves for Fastest Pickup
The quickest and most efficient way for leaves to be collected is for citizens to bag their leaves in clear plastic bags. To encourage this method, clear plastic bags will be available for free throughout leaf season at the City of Hickory’s Public Services Complex located at 1441 Ninth Avenue NE. One roll of clear plastic bags will be given per visit to Hickory citizens residing within City limits. Bagged leaves placed to the curb are collected weekly on citizens’ normal service day.
Kick Off the Holidays with Lowes Foods Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting
The City of Hickory traditionally hosts its annual holiday season kick-off event, the Lowes Foods Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting, the Friday before Thanksgiving. This year's holiday kickoff event will be held on Friday, November 18, starting at 5:45 p.m. Lowes Foods has been the sponsor of this festive event since the first year. Immediately following the parade through downtown, Santa will light the tree on Union Square. Enjoy holiday music, shopping specials, free hot chocolate, and more!
The City of Hickory is proud to offer curbside collection of leaves again this season, as one of the many services provided by the Solid Waste Division of Public Works. Each collection area of the city will have two pickups, and time allotted in each area is based on the number of mature trees and the size of each collection area.
City of Hickory Public Works crews collected more than 8 million pounds of leaves during the 2021-2022 leaf season, and crews are geared up and ready to begin this year’s loose leaf collection on November 14. Curbside leaf collection will continue until January 20, 2023, per the announced schedule.
The City of Hickory is partnering with the Sabre Society of North Carolina/Hickory Aviation Museum and Catawba Valley Community College to construct a building to house the museum's vintage military aircraft, preserve aviation history, and provide STEM education and workforce development opportunities. You can help us create an elevated aviation experience by making a tax-deductible donation towards the new Hickory Aviation Museum.
