Independence Day Closures

Happy Independence Day! City of Hickory offices, libraries, and recreation centers will be closed on Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. The Solid Waste Division and its services, including garbage and recycling pickup, will operate on a normal schedule this week. The Hickory City Council meeting regularly scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, has been canceled due to the holiday.

Saturday Screenings

Sit back, relax, and enjoy free movies this summer! Saturday Screenings take place at 8:45 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of July and August. The film series will feature Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark on July 12; Honey, I Shrunk the Kids on July 26; Sing on Aug. 9; and National Treasure on Aug. 23. All movies are family-friendly with a PG rating.

New IT Director

The City of Hickory has hired Darin Kiracofe as its new information technology director. Kiracofe started his new role on June 23, taking over as head of the Information Technology (IT) department for the City of Hickory. The IT Department is responsible for maintaining the City’s computer systems, local and metropolitan area networks, switches, servers, telecommunications, data storage devices, and other items related to technology. This includes providing technical support for 300+ personal computers and 400+ mobile devices, including cell phones, tablets, and laptops.

Neighborhood College

Want to learn more about the inner workings of your local government? The City of Hickory will offer its popular Neighborhood College program this fall. Neighborhood College is a free series of professionally led sessions designed to teach citizens about the City of Hickory departments and their functions. This immersive, 10-week program is an educational experience that shows how the City operates on a day-to-day basis and plans for the future. The 2025 program will begin on Sept. 15, with weekly sessions held on Monday evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Fall Sports Registration

Registration is now underway for the City of Hickory's Youth Tackle Football and Soccer programs. Participation is free to all City of Hickory residents, and nonresidents can also participate by paying a $40 nonresident fee. Online registration for both youth sports programs is available at hickory.recdesk.com through July 30.
