It’s “Howl” o-ween! Bring your furry friends to the 2nd Halloween Pet Parade & Costume Contest at Downtown Union Square! On Friday, October 20, at 6 p.m., the parade will start in the grassy area between the Olde Hickory Station and the lower City parking lot. On Saturday, October 28, starting at 9 a.m., all ages are invited to join us for this fun, family friendly, Halloween-themed 5K! The race will start and finish at Highland Recreation Center. Costumes are encouraged, and dogs are welcome to participate this year! A portion of proceeds will benefit the Bill McDonald Scholarship Fund. Winter Youth Sports Registration
Registration is now underway for the City of Hickory's Youth Basketball and Indoor Soccer programs. Participation is free to all City of Hickory residents, and nonresidents can also participate by paying a $40 nonresident fee. Each participant will also purchase their team jersey to complete registration. Registration is open until October 18. If it is your child’s first time participating with the Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department, a copy of his or her birth certificate must be turned in at the Administrative Offices, located at 1451 8th Street Drive NE, prior to participation.
Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument before, or have had a guitar that you’ve never learned to play, this is your perfect opportunity to make the music you have always wanted to make. Guitar Center's talented and experienced instructors will be at Highland Recreation Center (1451 8th Street Drive NE, Hickory, NC 28601) every Wednesday evening, August 2 through September 6. These lessons are for acoustic or electric guitars, and are open to all ages. If you have an electric guitar and need an amplifier speaker, then please specify when registering. Loaner acoustic guitars will be available if you need a guitar for the lessons. Registration for this 6-week series is REQUIRED. You may sign up and pay for each lesson individually, pay for three weeks at a time, or pay for five weeks and receive one lesson FREE. Senior Adult Day Trip
Join us on Friday, October 27, for a beautiful, scenic, mountain drive to several quaint roadside shops and the Tanger Outlets in Blowing Rock. We will also be making a stop for lunch. We will depart from Highland Recreation Center (1451 8th Street Drive NE, Hickory, NC 28601) at 9 a.m. and will return at 4 p.m. This trip is open to adult seniors and costs $5 per participant.
