Do you enjoy sports playing cards and other collectables? If so, come out to Highland Recreation Center on Saturday, September 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for our very first Cards and Sports Memorabilia Show at Highland Recreation Center. Doggie Olympics
Is your dog ready to be a Doggie Olympian!? If so, bring them out to Fairbrook Optimist Dog Park on Saturday, September 9 at 10 a.m., to compete in a variety of contests, including best trick, frisbee toss, and more! There is no cost to participate; however, we are asking that you make a monetary donation or donate dry adult dog food, canned puppy food, and any kind of cat or kitten food. All proceeds and donations will benefit Catawba County Animal Services. Hickory Police Officers will be on site to meet and greet the community and to provide educational material on animal control. Beginner Guitar Lessons
Whether you’ve never picked up an instrument before, or have had a guitar that you’ve never learned to play, this is your perfect opportunity to make the music you have always wanted to make. Guitar Center's talented and experienced instructors will be at Highland Recreation Center (1451 8th Street Drive NE, Hickory, NC 28601) every Wednesday evening, August 2 through September 6. These lessons are for acoustic or electric guitars, and are open to all ages. If you have an electric guitar and need an amplifier speaker, then please specify when registering. Loaner acoustic guitars will be available if you need a guitar for the lessons. Registration for this 6-week series is REQUIRED. You may sign up and pay for each lesson individually, pay for three weeks at a time, or pay for five weeks and receive one lesson FREE. Bird lovers of all ages are invited to Glenn Hilton Park on Saturday, September 16, to learn about identifying and feeding wild birds in our area. The program will start at 9 a.m. at Picnic Shelter #1 with a brief presentation from Wild Birds Unlimited, followed by a nature walk on the boardwalk. For anyone ages 8-14 that is interested in learning how to skateboard, here is your chance! Beginners Skateboard Lessons will be held on Saturday, September 30, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Stanford Skate Park. These classes will go over board control, balance, and safety.
